about

When compiling the initial '1990-94' edition of this Early Days series I concentrated primarily on my early 4-track cassette recordings made first at school and then with my first recorder at home; in parallel with these recordings though was eleven hours of compositions made between November 1990 and May 1994 using the song memory of my Yamaha PSS-790 and recorded straight to cassette, out of which I only included four pieces. I'd intended for the rest of it to stay hidden but then when I digitally archived the eleven C60s during Covid-19 lockdown I realised that there were moments here and there which I wouldn't object to being heard. To that end, I chose and edited the pieces and extracts of pieces that I felt deserved it and compiled them into this collection; the earliest being a minute-long extract from the ten minute 'Triangulum' from April 1991 and the latest being the very last recording 'Virgo' from May 1994.

After some deliberation I arrived at the title 'First Base' as these were literally my first recorded steps in self-expression; the music bears scant resemblance to that which I make today, yet even in these earliest naive experiments a predilection for repeating minimalist patterns and drones can be found. I hadn't yet taught myself much at that time and it's modally and harmonically simple, but it has a charm of its own. Even that early on I seemed to gravitate towards a sense of the 'cosmic' despite being limited to a basic keyboard with a simple collection of sounds and only a primitive and barely-there onboard reverb which could be frustrating at times, nevertheless I had a burning desire to make and record music come what may. At least with what I have at my disposal today, I have been able to clean up and present this music in its best possible and properly-reverberated light.

Jim Tetlow: Early Days Leicester, UK

The albums in this section compile music Jim made in the first seven years of his recorded output, 1990-97. This was an embryonic time of experimentation, of trial and error, during which some personal hallmarks began to emerge. The music he recorded from 1998 onwards has been compiled via aesthetics, whereas the Early Days series constitutes a kind of 11-album Selected Ambient Works. ... more
